Biology Contribution to Modern Psychology
The understanding of biology has affected and continues to affect the practice of psychology today. In Biology, the study of immunology, it is believed that the body has the capability of building antibodies to fight against any antigen. This means that living organisms incorporate stimulus and information from the environment they are based in.
This is an aspect which modern neural constructivists are asserting today (Gazzaniga, pp 17). The immunology idea is based on the fact that the globulin molecules will develop immune response through forming around any antigen. This idea was however refuted in the mid 1960s through a research which showed that all the living organisms; human and mice had antibodies which they are born with. The role of the body from the research is to respond to the environments instruction. This is where by the antigen which is invaded makes a selection of antibodies which are already available in the body. The antibodies are produced and amplified as an immune response. This shows that the complexity of the immune system is built within the body of an organism. This same complexity also happens in the mind (Leahey, 2003, pp 12)
Biological mechanisms such as the selection theory have also contributed to the better understanding of the brain function in the mind among the neuroscientists. Biological processes are mainly based on the concept of selection rather than on instructional basis. In the theory of survival for the fittest, the organisms which have the adaptive features thrive best than those without. Another selection process also happens in the microorganism mutation leading to the development of the resistant strains. These processes are based on instruction but rather on selection. Although the biological processes may look like instructional processes, because they receive information from the environment to change, selection process is in fact the main idea.
The nervous system is also the same as the biological selection process. The mind is instructed through the happenings in the environment. Such a learning process is similar to the selection process organisms according to neurobiologists have a cornucopia for determining the neural networks for some leaning processes which are genetically determined. This means that in a learning process there built-in response array which seeks to fit into a particular change in the environment.
In language learning Chomsky indicated that sentences are formed through the building of the already existing elements to the development of bigger and better structures. He showed this through a computational apparatus. The same applies in the human thoughts. In the study of language acquisition, it is believed that children internalize the grammar rules even before they become fully aware of the grammatical rules as taught in grade school. These are some of the processes which imply to the procedural level and operant are not based on symbolic interaction (Franks, 2003).
Our experiences help us to develop better solutions for adapting to the changes and challenges taking place in the environment. These devices are built in as seen in neural studies in biology which come up in helping us face new problems. In psychology, the study of how the mind works has mainly been facilitated through biological evolutionary perspective. This perspective indicates that the human mind is reflected thousands of neural devices within the brain. These devices play the role of enabling man to walk, talk, move, and learn language among others.
From studying biologys contribution to psychology, it is true that the environment and organism and nature and nurture are different qualitative realms. The perceptual environment is created from the human experience and the brain adapts to these experiences. Human perception is developed from the frequent interaction within the environment and their experiences. The perception determines cognitive interpretation on the immediate experiences faced by human beings.
Biology has never solved the problem of consciousness. This is the establishment of the sensation and feelings found in the unconscious mind. Various biological processes have to be in place to establish the occurrence of consciousness. These are the tonic events seen in neural correlates of consciousness. Biological studies indicate that the entire brain is enough for consciousness. Biologists have therefore worked in making better representation through research which views animal cognition and consciousness from an evolutionary perspective. Biological researched have helped psychologists in determining whether species differ on the basis of their cognitive abilities. This is the process of cognitive psychology which have facilitated in the understanding of evolution in animals. Animal cognition is a topic which psychologists have to internalize various biological aspects (Koch, 2004, pp 88).
The contribution of biology to psychology shows an associative learning process. Psychologists study the output of biological system. The understanding of the mental behavior and process can best be done through biological studies of adaptation evolution and selection process.
