NEW YORK — Walmart’s paper hearts are coming to the shelves of more than 1,300 grocery stores across the country in the coming weeks, the retailer announced Tuesday.
The new product, called paper heart and paper towel meme, comes as Walmart prepares to unveil a major expansion into its e-commerce platform.
The company is planning to launch a new paper-based offering at more than a dozen locations over the next few months, including a new store in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Walton Brothers has been working on the paper heart for years, said the company’s chief marketing officer, Steve Weston.
The product has been around for a number of years now, Weston said.
While the heart has been available for years in grocery stores, Walmart had not launched a new product at the retail level until now, he said.
It will be the first paper-centered offering at a grocery, Weston added.
“The idea that we have of doing something to make a statement and making people feel better about the products that they buy is really cool,” Weston said of the new product.
This is a very exciting time for the company.
Walmart is not only bringing back its paper hearts but it’s also launching a new, more organic line of products, Weston explained.
The new product is designed to be as low-tech and low-impact as possible, he added.
Walton’s paper-centric offering will be available at Walmart Supercenter stores starting July 12, the company said in a news release.
The grocery chain also is planning a limited number of online sales for the new paper heart products starting July 19.
As a grocery retailer, Walmart has always been known for its commitment to sustainability, Weston noted.
It is committed to the environment, to being responsible with the environment and its customers, Weston continued.
In a separate statement, Walmart said that it will be partnering with the National Resource Center on Waste and Recycling, a non-profit that is committed “to supporting the health and well-being of our communities and working to reduce our environmental footprint.”
Walter Weston, Walmart’s chief product officer, says the company will be introducing a new line of paper heart snacks in July.
The brand is also exploring ways to make paper heart more eco-friendly.
Walmart has been one of the top retailers in the United States for years.
The retailer reported $10.8 billion in annual sales last year, up from $6.9 billion in 2015.
